Fixed NGINX Plus response type confusion by validating maps, arrays, peer entries, and server strings before accessing MessagePack values. Added allocation checks, error propagation, and cleanup so malformed responses fail the scrape safely.

Added collector pause/resume callbacks to prevent shutdown leaks, plus regression tests covering all five table endpoints, 122 malformed payloads, and recovery.

Build, functional tests, strict Valgrind checks, and commit-prefix lint passed. All three commits include DCO sign-offs and verified GPG signatures.

tests/integration/.venv/bin/python -m pytest tests/integration/scenarios/in_nginx_exporter_metrics -q -n 5
tests/integration/run_tests.py --valgrind --valgrind-strict scenarios/in_nginx_exporter_metrics -q -n 5

Testing
Before we can approve your change; please submit the following in a comment:

  • Example configuration file for the change
  • Debug log output from testing the change
  • Attached Valgrind output that shows no leaks or memory corruption was found

If this is a change to packaging of containers or native binaries then please confirm it works for all targets.

  • Run local packaging test showing all targets (including any new ones) build.
  • Set ok-package-test label to test for all targets (requires maintainer to do).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • NGINX Plus metrics now report failures for malformed API responses, including invalid tables, numeric values, peer details, and upstream states.
    • Recognized upstream states and unsigned counter values are now handled correctly, including values up to the 64-bit maximum.
    • Metrics recover when valid responses resume, and upstream server details are reported correctly.

📝 Walkthrough

The NGINX Plus input validates response types and values, propagates parsing failures, checks REST API version entries, and registers collector pause and resume callbacks. Integration tests cover malformed responses, upstream state values, unsigned counter boundaries, and recovery after valid responses.

Changes: NGINX Plus input

Layer / File(s) Summary
Metric payload parsing
plugins/in_nginx_exporter_metrics/nginx.c
Metric processors validate scalar values and nested response maps. The connections, SSL, and HTTP request collectors propagate parsing results.
Table and upstream response validation
plugins/in_nginx_exporter_metrics/nginx.c, tests/integration/scenarios/in_nginx_exporter_metrics/tests/test_plus_schema.py
Table and upstream processors validate response shapes, numeric fields, peer entries, and state strings. The collectors propagate failures. Tests cover malformed responses, recognized states, unsigned counter boundaries, and recovery with valid responses.
REST API version validation
plugins/in_nginx_exporter_metrics/nginx.c
Version parsing rejects entries that are not positive integers or exceed INT_MAX.
Collector pause and resume
plugins/in_nginx_exporter_metrics/nginx.c
The input plugin defines and registers callbacks to pause and resume its collector.

The recovery test should check a metric from the endpoint it disrupts. This is a bounded test gap rather than evidence that collection currently fails.

P2 Badge Validate scalar types on the simple metric endpoints

When /connections, /ssl, or /http/requests returns a map with a non-integer metric, such as {"accepted": 1.5}, these processors still read cur->val.via.i64 without checking its MessagePack type and then set ret = 0. The malformed response therefore corrupts the exported counter and leaves nginxplus_up at 1 instead of failing the scrape; validate each recognized field before accessing the union and add failure coverage for these three endpoints.

P2 Badge Validate scalar values inside table responses

The new check only verifies that responses itself is a map; payloads such as {"zone":{"requests":1.5,"responses":{"2xx":[]}}} still reach reads of .via.i64 on float or array objects and are reported as a successful scrape. The same unchecked scalar access exists in the other zone and upstream processors, so all recognized counters, gauges, and response entries need numeric-type validation, with malformed-scalar cases added to the integration matrix.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Assert a recovered metric from the selected endpoint.

When the selected endpoint reports nginxplus_up 1 but fails to restore its metric series, this assertion can still pass. The mock serves valid responses for other table endpoints, whose metrics can also contain zone. Match a metric name and labels specific to endpoint so the test verifies recovery of that endpoint.
